Women in Worship: Molly Broomer

Hello there everyone!

I love being a woman. I love everything about it. I love femininity, I love relationships and all the lovey-dovey” stuff we get stereotyped for, I love the chick flicks and the flowers and the dresses and the makeup. I love the strength of a woman - the ability to overcome great obstacles, to fight fiercely for the ones she loves, to rise to any occasion, and to do it all with grace and beauty. It has saddened me to watch our society slowly, but surely, change the expectations on women. We are, in short, being forced to be just like men in order to feel equal and look equal and to be respected by our female peers. The message I feel I am receiving is this: If you dont want to be just like a man and have all the things a man has, youre failing as a woman. I know this has leeched into every area of life already - I fear it may leech into the worship/church leadership area of our lives as well. 

I am not a feminist in the traditional sense of the word. I am comfortable with the differences between men and women and I want to keep it that way. On the other hand, Im not a person who claims that women belong in the home and nowhere else.” I believe women have a lot to offer the Church and historically we have been called on to fill gaps and lead where there has been desperate need. I also believe that what a woman brings to the worship table, specifically, is really beautiful and unique. My dear desire for women everywhere is to experience the freedom to be exactly who God made us to be, as females and as leaders. It can be both. We can be both gentle and strong. We can be both relational and visionary. We can be both humble and confident. 

In my experiences of leading, both on and off the stage, the struggle has been coming to terms with who I am and what my gifts can offer to a group of people. We each, as individuals, have to learn to love our own gifts and personalities and to be confident in who God made us. We also have to come to terms with our weaknesses and address any issues that may arise because of them. On top of this, women have a little extra work to do. We need to be confident that we are where God has called us to be. We need to be aware of the environment God has put us in, the challenges that may exist with our co-workers and the volunteers under us, etc. We need to be sure we know who we are and what were about. I feel that because theres often already a hidden (or maybe not so hidden!) attitude about whether we are right for the job and whether we can handle it, women need that extra dose of confidence and grace under fire. This comes from being deeply rooted in the Vine, tethered to His will and drinking directly from the Source of life. Keep in mind, confidence and servant leadership are different than defensive, territorial guardianship of your position. It may feel like you need to be on guard with your fences up, but I promise - serving is better. Grace is better. Humility is better. It pays off in the end, even if only to save you from sinking to the level of those who would see you fail. 

Remember that while women have struggles and strengths unique to being female, our male counterparts have struggles and strengths as well. Neither side should be seeking to put the other down or become the better sex. Being a confident female leader should include blessing the men in your life, offering them respect whenever you can, and choosing to build them up. Men have a unique calling from the Lord and they also have unique weaknesses which make them vulnerable to the attacks of the Enemy (as do we!). You can choose to celebrate them for who they are, just as we so often wish to be celebrated! I believe if women are to be equal” in all eyes, it will be because we chose to be gracious, while not being ashamed or chased away from leadership. I believe it will be because we served well and built up those around us, not because we competed and beat them in every arena. That is not how the Kingdom of God will advance. That is not His design for the Church or for the sexes.  

On stage, I know that aspects of my femininity, the things about us that make us different from men - these are often the very things I rely on to be effective and these are the things that I know God uses so often to reach the congregation. When it comes to music, especially worship music, nothing can make me cry faster. I am relational and transparent - I love to share! And dont we all? Isnt that what makes our womens retreats and our girls-night-outs so great? I am also strong in what I believe and know is true. So I use that on stage! I share my heart, I share whats been true for me the past week, I encourage people to lean into Biblical truth, I cry so often, its become a running joke at our Church! But I wouldnt have it any other way, and neither would my people. They feel comfortable opening up with me, the feel comfortable being vulnerable in worship because I have gone before them. That is the job of any worship leader, and I feel as women we have so much to offer in this area! 

In wrapping up, I suppose my encouragement is this: be who you are. Be who God made you to be. Be strong & confident in your gifts and your talent and your leadership. Don't try to be a man, dont try to be like another leader you admire. Find what makes you you and go for it. Focus on loving God and the people around you, becoming more like Jesus each day and giving His love away to the world. I believe God created us male and female for a reason. I believe that together, we reflect the wholeness of a perfect God. You have a purpose - to reflect a beautiful part of who God is. Being a woman is a fierce and wonderful thing. We have so much to offer the worship world and the world at large. I am so blessed to be part of that.

Previous Lives and The End of Summer

Hello there, everyone! 

I realize that I haven't been very present on the blog. Blogging has taken a back seat to just enjoying summer vacation. However!! I'm going to fill you in, in one fell swoop of all the exciting things that have been going on in casa de Parrish. We don't actually call it that, sorry for that moment.

Anyways, this summer has been nothing short of awesome. Really! Here's the very fast recap:

We released our very first recorded project!! When I say project, I mean it. Being married and writing original music... not always easy! In fact that leads me to my next fun announcement, Nate and I have been invited to become regular contributors to an online worship resource called The Church Collective! Our first article is the practicals of writing music with a spouse. You think what all those cute married worship power couples is easy? It is not! Either way, that article is on it's way, and you will hear about that when it comes.

Nate and I have done a few radio interviews for the EP, which has been really fun. We even did an interview for a station in Ireland! The DJ's accent was so think I really had to concentrate! Also... it was at 7am. Thanks a lot, time zones! 

Nate has been a part of this alternate music dimension before (more about that later), and so I really just let him take the lead. The key is to be short and sweet and right to the point, while also throwing in a bit of your sense of humor.  

We took a little road trip to the Alameda county faire! It was hotter than the surface of the sun, (remember I live in a constant of 68-75 degrees, I'm a total weather wimp), but it was so fun! This picture kind of looks like an endorsement for BudLight...but trust me, it's not. In fact it's the opposite! I'd like to take this time and tell you how gross I think it is :) Either way the fair was really fun, and there were animals everywhere, and music, and crafts... I felt just like Leslie Knope, my dream girl.
Also, this happened! I got my hair did! I live within walking distance from LeMelange in Napa... the beauty college, and my dear friend, Amy, is a whiz at the salon chair. She really is... I decided, oh a whim, to go full white/platinum 20 minutes before my appointment. I've wanted to for years, but it was always too expensive. Finally! My Elsa dreams have come true! I feel like this is how I was supposed to look. I don't know how you feel about it, but to be honest, I don't care. I love it.

And now, for my final and probably the most life altering announcement. I'm not having a baby. Let's get that out of the way right away. If that were the case, it would be it's own announcement, and it would be me screaming. 

Years ago, before Napa, Roseville, or Citrus Heights, There was Stockton/Modesto. Before there was Parrish or Kingdom, there was Worth Dying For. While Nate was in WDF he had the great opportunity of meeting tons of people in the industry and make actual, real, relationships. Well, the season of our lives, and lifestyle, with WDF has been over for a long time now. The Lord, for lack of better terms had kind of taken that away and forced us to really seek Him (read our story here). It was, and has been an incredible Journey, but Nate has never lost the desire to be a full-time musician. Well, about six weeks ago Nate got a phone call from his friend James, asking if he still did music, and if he did, if he'd like to go on the road with his band, Kutless. 

Long story short, starting in August, Nate will be playing guitar for Kutless and joining them on the road. We have really prayed about it, and the Lord confirmed in our hearts that this is a good thing. For those of you who know about Kutless, or Christian music, or even Nate, it seems like a no-brainer that he would go. The Lord has given full-time, traveling music back to Nate. This is a big deal for us, and a huge answer to prayer. We see it as a blessing for being faithful to the Lord, and giving 100% wherever we are, and being thankful for it. Sometimes that means giving 100% leading worship at your small church. Sometimes that means giving 100% to being a music teacher. Well now for Nate it means touring with Kutless. We are so very thankful for the opportunity, and would appreciate your prayers as we walk into this next chapter.






Faith Is The Assurance of Things Hoped For... And Other Summer Plans

Hello there! 

I have very exciting news. The recording process is over. The mastering process is over. The CD Baby process is over. PARRISH EP is coming out next month, for reals! Nathan's and my labor of love over the past 6-8 months is coming to fruition

Nathan and I have a love for Americana, old country, and the Gospel plain and simple. I feel like our release is a good representation of that.

We got to record half of our EP in Topanga Canyon at Jackknife Lee's studio "The Garage". If you look closely, you can see Jackknife's Grammy for Album of the Year for How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb...yep. U2. My youngest brother works for Jackknife, and it was very kind of him to let us use his beautiful space.

Actually, my brother, Matt (Insta: MathBishop) helped us through the entire process, and for sure without him none of this could have been possible. It was such a great thing to see him truly in his element. He has such a huge talent production-wise, and such a great professional persona about him. 


A lot of love and caffeine went into this project... A lot.

So, what are my summer plans?! This is it. Play music, make music, lead worship, read, read at the beach, drink coffee, drink coffee at the beach... all with Nathan, or the Abina's, or the girls from Life (our college ministry). It's going to be glorious.



and now, I sit here pondering my school year. If you follow me on Instagram (ParrishTheThoughtBlog), you will see that I'm in sentimental mode. The first class I ever taught Bible 10 for is graduating, and they have voted for me to speak at their graduation ceremony. There are so many things I could say about this group of students, but I'll just say this. This is the class that taught me to teach, so I've grown attached. 

It never ceases to amaze and humble me; the goodness of God. His over abundant grace, and how much I do not deserve any of this. This school-year has impacted me in a major way. I had breakthrough many times over, I fasted for the first time, The Lord used me to bring a student to Him, and now I am giving the big speech at graduation. He is good, all the time. All the time, He is good.

Follow God And Do As You Wish

Hi Everyone! Happy Wednesday to you! I hope this week has been treating you well thus far. I've been able to stay productive despite the rain, but yesterday the Lord really put this on my heart to share. I think it's the artsy teacher side of me that compells me to post this today.



I went to a tiny Christian high school in Lodi, CA, and when I was a senior I had no plan. College was just the next step, so I went to the local JC and wandered around until I found something I wanted to do. Thats when I found myself in the local music scene, I went to shows and I made new and very interesting friends. I wasn't declared, but I took tons of music classes because thats what I liked enough to stay in school. They were not easy courses (music theory...am I right), but they came easily to me. Being a Music Major wasnt something that I chose. It was almost like music chose me. Almost like... it was something God wanted me to do.

It's about this time of year when "the top 10 worst college majors" lists come out. Here are the top 5.
1) English/Literature
2) Fine Arts
3) Religious Studies (whoops)
4) Performing Arts (dang it)
5) Education (oh, come on!)

It almost makes me laugh. What makes these majors "the worst" is based soley on income. I have two favorite quotes. One of them has nothing to do with this post, but it's from Abraham Lincoln, and he rocks. The other is from St. Augustine, and is the title of this post. "Follow God and do what you want."  This changed my life a high school student who hated the academic side of school. I didn't want to go to school to just have a job that would put me behind a desk, and everything that entails. (Which is totally ironic as a teacher).



So I didn't! I played music! I played shows! I dropped out of College (don't do that though)! I traveled! I worked in ministry! I got married! Then I went back to school...when I realized that no degree meant working at Victoria's Secret in Stockton CA my whole life... and I majored in Music and Bible and Theology. The two things I love the most, and I am getting to do those things all day everyday, ironically as a high school music and bible teacher. I am not making the "median income" as Mr. Forbes would call it. By all worldy standards I am working way too hard for way too little money. But what is that compared to conversations with students about Christ, after class been let out! What is money compared to that which is eternal. What is money in comparison to the peace of mind that comes from obedience? What is money in comparison to love? 

Jesus told the pharisees on the day of conflict before his crucifixion, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, but give to God what is God's." If what you love is business (and truthfully, if you're a creative mind, a business major can totally allow your creative mind to be free and fulfilled), or engineering, or math/science, then yay you! Give that to the Lord and be awesome! If what you love is painting, or writing, or unerwater basketweaving, then yay to you too! If you are doing what you love in obedience to Christ, money is no object. Make money so you can live (and pay your taxes), But Give the Lord what belongs to Him...everything else. It's all his anyways.

Hello There! Happy Good Friday to you. Today is the first day of my spring break, and seriously, I couldn't imagine a better way to spend the first day of my time off, thinking about what Jesus did for me, for all of us, on the cross. Nathan and I are very passionate about making sure people know that Jesus is Lord, and that they know that their guilt from sin and shame can be lifted. This is the song we wrote to express that day when Jesus took our sin on His shoulders and rescued us from what we actually deserve. Thank you Lord, for your salvation.
 
The lion became the lamb, so that you could be with Him in glory one day. Amen and Amen.
 

Walking Dates in Napa

Hi Everyone! I hope you had a great week. Mine was so very busy! I couldn't even take one second to even to jot down a single thought. Life gets crazy for me in this part of the school year. I have two huge field trips that takes a ton of energy organize and prepare for, and three other classes to maintain. It's a lot. Not to mention Spring break is five weeks away. I'm not counting or anything!

This past Saturday we walked downtown to Model Bakery in the Oxbow District for breakfast. This place makes the best breakfast Sandwiches! I get the chipotle breakfast sandwich, and a mocha every time. Sometimes you have to wait in a long line that goes out the door, but it is so worth it. Also, it's just really nice to be able to walk from our house to Model and chat with Nathan about life, and Jesus, and music. He tends to be the best for that :)

We talked about how, Right now the Lord is really showing me the true desires of my heart, which I have been praying that He would do for a while. It's started with the fast, and it is slowly but surely being more and more confirmed as I proceed through the school year. My real desire and passion is ministry and music, and I am praying about the most effective way to do that VCS, and how to make sure the students are being ministered to in the way that they need. I know what the Lord is saying for me to do, but it's about me trusting him and taking that next step. I know he will take care of it. If there is one thing I've learned over these past few years, is that, if it's what God wants, He makes it happen. So I'm trusting Him. Then our conversation moved on to really deep stuff... like which Marvel action figures Nate needs to finish his collection.

And I Thought To Myself, "I Can Do That!"

When I was in high school, I was told by a Choir Director in passing conversation that he never gave solos to anyone who asked for one, because it meant their heart wasn't in the right place. He also said if you were good enough, you would just get asked to be in leadership/get a solo/get to lead worship. At the time I agreed, and acted in accordance with what I thought was a really righteous way of selecting leaders. This eventually formed me into a person so scared of looking prideful, I never ever put myself out there musically. This lead to me to being overlooked (not in a mean-spirited, or poor-leadership kind of way), wondering why I wasn't moving forward, then ultimately wondering if I was good enough I was at the point where I was thinking that maybe I had been fooling myself my entire life. My senior year of college was a time of questioning, and a lot of soul searching. 

The point of that weird anecdote is this: I was holding on to a lie, and it grew in my heart into debilitating fear. It wasn't until very recently that I began to pray in earnest for the Lord to change my heart and my thinking on this. 

Music comes very naturally to me. My piano is an extension of my arms. I can't not sing a song I know while riding in the car. God doesn't give us gifts and talents, so we can hide it away. I had a little light and I was hiding it (under a bushel...no!).

It was being at Desperation conference in CO where God really broke the chains in my heart. I had honestly thought that song "Break every chain" was silly emotional crap until then. It was watching people doing what they were obviously called to do, and doing it confidently and unapologetically. 

My stream of thought went a little like this, "Oh my gosh, Lord please forgive me, I have been so wrong. I have been so resistant, and so falsely humble.... I can do that, Lord, I'm gonna do it....(tons of crying)." 

So, here I am now. I'm not doing it on a huge stage with thousands of people. I'm not writing instant hits with viral Youtube videos. But I'm doing it. Nathan and I are writing for real for the first time. We are leading together for real for the first time. We are as poor as we were in the beginning and there is fear in stepping out...but there is provision. I guess the ultimate point of this blog is this:

There is peace in obedience, and no money can buy that.

Hello there!
Happy Friday to you! My last post was on my New Year's Resolutions, so I thought I would share  my Spiritual Resolution. I only have one, because I feel like everything starts there, and over the years, I've kind of forgotten.

Worship for real. Sunday morning worship isn't my time to intimately worship God. That sounds really awful at face value, but being on stage it's not really my job to lead myself, it's my job to lead others. So my spiritual resolution is worship God by myself. Not with our worship band, not even with Nathan. Just me, my instrument, Jesus, and my Bible. Everything starts with worship. It's not that I dont worship when I lead on Sundays, or Fridays, but there's so much more going on in my mind. Can I hear the monitors? What is the congegation doing? Are they engaged? Am I being consious not manipulate? What are Nate and Jordan doing? Who is doing announcements? Whats the song order? Whats going on with the other harmonies? When I worship by myself, all of those things go away. I know that if I start with worship, for real, for me, for Jesus, the rest of whatever it is that the Lord has will come, and whatever that is, it's what I want.

Countless Second Chances We've Been Given

Hello there everyone!! It's been way way way too long since I've updated my blog, I realize this. It's also been a very crazy time of transition life change. I kinda kept my blog up over the summer, so it's not really news that Nate and I are no longer in the Sacramento area. We now live in Napa CA. We moved in June, so we experienced the earthquake. If you saw the news on the quake you saw a lot of damage. Nate and I were spared...big time. We didn't have to move, we didn't lose anything expensive or special, and most importantly we were completely safe. It was scary, but we survived.

With the new year already in full swing, I actually have thought of a few goals I'd like to accomplish to this year! Here they are:


1. Write more songs. In my former life I was a singer/songwriter and did a significant amount traveling/performing. I'd like to do more of that. Nate suprised me by getting me the ukulele of my dreams for Christmas. I had bought a cheap one online so I could learn to play, but the one Nate got me is so beautiful and sounds so much better. They're also a lot easier to travel with than a Piano; which is my primary instrument. I've been playing for about a month now... I'm okay. I'd really like to get super good. As you can see, Oscar is way impressed with my rendition of "Rainbow Connection".
Nate an I did some recording this year. This has been an awesome addition to our married life. Being creative together has helped us learn stuff about each other we didn't know before. It's been really fun, and challenging writing and playing together. I've never wanted to punch someone I loved in the face before :)
2. Take more pictures!
I found an old Polaroid land camera in my Grandma's stuff after she passed away this past year in November. I also found this little green camera at an antique store. I wasn't sure if it worked or not, so I did a research and bought some film for it. Turns out this little camera is broken, but it sparked a new interest/hobby in vintage cameras and film photography. Don't expect any "Parrish the Thought Photography" instagram account or anything, but I do need to get better at taking pictures of stuff that matters,

3. Get a hair cut. A real one.
This is a screenshot of my iPad. It has taken me 5 years to grow my hair to this length from a close-cut pixie cut. I've endured the shaggy Justin Beiber phase (featured here). I venteured away from my very trusted hairstylist and received one of the WORST haircuts ever, and recovered.

The truth is, I really just don't have the time necessary to have long hair. Not to mention that my hair just isn't healthy, and it needs to start over. I'm thinking bob with baby bangs.  It would be easy and still way stylish. I dont know. But my goal is to get a significant cut. I like this one... we'll see...maybe not so short. See, there I go.
4. Blog more. This has been my goal for a long time. I love Parrish The Thought. I know it doesn't really seem like it. But I do. I don't have a lap top or the internet, so finding time and resources is hard. But I think if I were to have a lap top it might be easier to get this kind of thing done.

Anyways, lots of new things on the horizon. New music, new hair, new... everything! I have spiritual goals as well, but that is post all it's own. See you soon!

Hello Everyone!! I hope your week is going well. Mine’s going pretty good. It’s weird being officially out of school. I know it’ll be especially weird when the fall rolls around and my younger friends will be going back to school. I remember when I took a break to tour, when I was 21, my friends went back to school in the spring, it was really super strange. Anyways, my days have been filled with job boards and resume sending. I’ve had three scheduled interviews, one right as I got back from choir tour, one yesterday, and I have one next week.  The Interview next week is for part time work to keep me from going out of my mind with boredom, nothing serious.  I’m one of those people that just can’t stay still, I have to be doing something.

Anyways! This is what I decided to wear today. Super-duper casual. I’m really not much of a shorts person. I’m not the hugest fan of my legs. They’re really white, and they bruise really easy, so I look really gross in shorts, but with these Sacramento summers, sometimes there’s no other option. One of these days I’ll post my interview outfits and you can give me pointers.



 I’ve been deciding to take my pictures inside more and more, people have been increasingly walking behind our apartment unit, I don’t know why. I’m not a fan of creepy strangers, so I just keep to myself. Also, I don’t really need people watching me taking pictures of my own self.


 Aren’t these shoes great? I know they just look like any ol’ normal pair of loafers, but I’ve been looking for the perfect pair for… months and months, and now, I’ve found some! Hooray!
That’s about it for me today. I gotta get to the airport! Also, heres one more picture from Fish Fest of my husband bringing the metal. I had to add this. His hair is too much. Welp, have a great rest of your day everyone. I’ll see you soon!

Wear Sunscreen

Oh. My. Gosh. So, I realize that I haven't posted anything since Easter Sunday. For that I do apologize, but wow. I've missed you like crazy. Sooooooo many life altering events have happened since I've last spoken to you. Needless to say, life was CRAZY!! So, here are some photos and videos in chronological order to catch you up. Lordy.

This fuzzy picture is a very unfortunate representation of one of the  highlights of my Jessup Career: The worship team that I had the privilege of leading/serving had the great privilege of leading worship for Francis Chan! If you're not aware of who Francis Chan is, I STRONGLY recommend you check out his website and read every little thing on there, buy all his books, take all his advice. Read the word, know Jesus, and disciple others. So simple, so strong. Also: I can't tell you enough how much I truly adored this team of people. I love love love this worship band. I already miss them so much.
My senior Recital! Remember how I told you that I was slaving away over the greatest labor of love? Well here it is. Also, my Grandma freaking made that dress for herself back in the day! Can you believe it? It's AMAZING! and to think: I almost put it up in the shop! Wow....

Oh yeah, and this: My freaking COLLEGE GRADUATION! I did it! I am now an educated citizen ready to be hired and serve the Lord in whatever capacity he calls me to. I've put in a few applications to various places, we'll see what happens!
Oh WJU leadership. Man, I love these people. Don't I kind of look like Squilliam Fancyson from Spongebob?
And then there was Choir tour. Since I'm as old as the day is new (and it's only 8:45, so it's pretty new), I was asked to drive the 12 passenger Van from CA to OR. If you know me, I drive a 98 Corolla, and I love it. I've never been the most confident driver, but I drove the road of adventure, and now I rock at driving. Choir Tour can now add "Conquer your fears" as things that you do. Check out Hwy 36 online if you ever get the chance. It's a scenic motorcycle drive... yeah, I did that in ginormous van. NBD.
Also, for those of you who didn't know, I served as the choir chaplain for the WJU music department. What an honor. This is a picture of my last devotion that I shared with the group. Needless to say, I couldn't make it without shedding a few tears. I so love this group. There are two young men picking up the baton to fill the position. Nick and Zoe. I believe in them so strongly, They're gonna do awesome!

And last but not least I finished super duper strong with straight A's my last semester. I don't think anything could sum up my 2 years at Jessup better than this scripture: Ephesians 3:20-21

20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

Adventures in Baby Sitting

Hi Everyone! Are you so ready for the weekend? I am. This week should have been a breeze with Monday off, but I'm actually quite stressed. I have officially joined the thousands of soon to be college graduates in the hunt for a job. I feel like the Lord told me to go back to school because my destiny wasn't retail work, and every retail job that I have taken since I've started school has fallen through. I was hired at Freestyle, and then un-hired due to my music department schedule. So despite my greatest efforts in retail employment, the message is clear after three failed attempts here in the Sacramento area: no Urban Outfitters, no Kohls, no Freestyle. All great stores, but not for me. The really actual resume sending, interview praying, has begun. So if you're in the Sacramento area, and you have a job for this soon to be college grad, you know what to do!

anyways! I think I've told you quite a few times before that my current "part-time" job is watching the funnest three children in the whole wide world. I thought instead of showing you my outfit of the day, I'd share one of the best parts of my time here at William Jessup University.

That's about it for me today, and...Well everyone there's a tiny glimpse into the life of student/wife/blogger/musician (not in that order, wife is first always). I actually am not constantly thinking of fashion, and spending all my hours reading other blogs. I hope you enjoyed a glance into my life from a different angle!
